SHUSHU TONG Research

In the previous post, I was saying that I wanted to complement my research about Robert Kaufman with other research so that I could have a more oriental inspiration and also, have a perspective on how I can incorporate my patter in pieces of cloth.

SHUSHU /TONG

SHUSHU/TONG, based in Shanghai, focuses on feminine design with a twist. SHUSHU/TONG was founded in 2015 by Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang and features modern women who choose to represent themselves by wearing unabashedly feminine details—ruffles, bowknots—but with a relaxed and cool attitude. Expect a one-of-a-kind silhouette and custom tailoring techniques created in-house.

After their first season, SHUSHU/TONG has added Lane Crawford(1) to their stock list, which now includes Dover Street Market, Opening Ceremony, 10 Corso Como, and H.Lorenzo, among others. And it continues to expand with each passing season.

Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang, a Shanghai-based design duo who both graduated from London College of Fashion's Womenswear MA programme, describe their aesthetic as "bold and feminine." Before launching their own label SHUSHU/TONG in 2015, these two "Generation Z" designers worked for Simone Rocha and Gareth Pugh, respectively.

The SHUSHU TONG website shows us their collections since 2015 until the last spring/summer collection 2021. My idea is to create a shawl in the end of my project, and I want to do it with a soft and fresh fabric, so when I first start scanning the website, I immediately went to spring/summer collections. It is incredible how the collections are shown in the website, beyond the stunning pieces, they have done a great job in terms of photos and styling.

Spring / Summer 2019

It seems like floral patterns are always a trend and this year is not an exception. I am impressed about the photo shoot for this collection. This collection have huge contrasts in colours. And it is not usual to mix a floral pattern in a white fabric with black pieces. And this is what makes this collection be different than others. The diversity of necklines, fabrics, colours, sleeves and details are perfectly choosen. The silhouette seems the same in all outfits and that is what makes the collection make sense.

Spring / Summer 2020

Once again, we can see a lot of floral patterns. This collection is not really my taste. The silhouettes are not that elegant because the pieces end in a weird place over the legs. In addition, the pattern looks boring and I think that is due to the background behind the flowers. Maybe I would choose a more contrast hue for this type of flowery.

Spring / Summer 2021

Again floral patterns. But in this collection SHUSHU TONG decided to add a vichy pattern(2). Mixing patterns are always a good option if we want to stand out in the fashion world and there are some patterns that look really good with each other.

(1) Lane Crawford is a multinational luxury fashion, beauty, and lifestyle department store with the world's largest designer portfolio, hand-picked by Lane Crawford's team of experts who travel the globe to find the best products for its customers.

(2) Vichy is a fashion trend that reappears regularly on the scene and infiltrates the streets, the closet, and the hearts of any fashion addict. It is also associated with the domestic climate, picnics, or bon tonne dresses. 2018 is the year of its comeback.
