Research: Trends for Awtumn / Winter 2020/21
For this season, these are the most relevant trends.
If last season was a total whiteout, where a number of key designers chose to show head-to-toe white, then come autumn, it’s back to black. Valentino, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Victoria Beckham, Off-White and Dolce & Gabbana all opened their shows with strong black silhouettes, while Chanel, Jil Sander, Ralph & Russo, Rochas, Kenzo, Lanvin and Brandon Maxwell championed tonal black throughout their collections.
Your coat’s vital stats for autumn: take Keanu Reeves’s Matrix character as your muse and make like Neo. Yes, there were XXL coats and shearling coats and trench coats and capes, but it was the buttery-soft leather coats that caught our eye. Structured and a little prim at Fendi and Versace, louche and more Nineties at Khaite and Tod’s, you’ll be surprised with how quickly they add a little polish to your jeans-and-a-sweater combo. Not convinced? As the Architect would say: “Denial is the most predictable of all human responses.”
Pink and red is another taboo duo that is big news for autumn/winter. These shades, reminiscent of the world's very best sunsets, look just as great in segmentalised sections - e.g. via block colour separates - as they do woven throughout via clashing pattern work. Keep it cute and avoid messy aesthetic punctuation marks by ensuring any accessories are in on the clashing action too.
One nil to the street-style set: after seasons of ‘It’ girls and influencers championing the shrug-it-on ease of a cardigan, the librarian favourite is back on all the biggest and brightest catwalks. Worn with everything from Seventies-hued denim (see ChloĆ©) to trouser suits (Coach 1941) and pencil skirts (Fendi, Christopher Kane), our favourite look came courtesy of Jacquemus, where Simon Porte Jacquemus, with the help of Jill Kortleve, made the cardigan sex symbol-worthy.
Purple is often overlooked as a power-colour, but the autumn/winter runways made a convincing case for its merits. Rarely seen as a standalone, they tended to come via layers of suiting, tonal outfits or matching dress-and-heels.
"This season is distinguished by a new femininity where codes are overturned, shaken up and daringly reworked. Creativity returns, imbued with a wish to truly stand out.
A femininity influenced by sport and street helps hybrid and evolve fashion.
The borderlines between classics, authentics and outdoor pieces are more closely linked with a “cool” masculine wardrobe. Meanwhile today’s more demonstrative women are extremely willing to show off! And finally, composed looks that blur the borders between upcycling, mixing-and-matching and clashing, contrasted universes are sometimes more powerful than individual products… or we work them in a more hybrid way."
We witnessed the comeback of flares last season, and this time around the mood was similarly retro. Designers looked to the ’70s once again for autumn/winter 2020, and patchwork reigned on the runways. The vintage styling at Dior spanned bandanas, fair isle sweaters and liberal amounts of layered jewellery.
Streets are awash with white denim. And even though it’s autumn, this particular go-to is going nowhere. Wear with a trench for a taste of late summer styling, or with a white shirt for a top-to-toe look (not recommended for a pasta dinner).
Boyfriend jeans are back. Nineties kids will know all about the grungy, loose-fitting styles of the era, frequently seen on Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber. Gucci’s autumn/winter 2020 show saw baggy jeans styled with feminine blouses to take the edge off; Rejina Pyo paired dark denim with leather, and Kwaidan Editions kept it casual on the bottom and slinky on the top by adding a black silk shirt.
While I show you the trends, I will explaine in which of them DENIM can fit.
BLACK TO BLACK
If last season was a total whiteout, where a number of key designers chose to show head-to-toe white, then come autumn, it’s back to black. Valentino, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Victoria Beckham, Off-White and Dolce & Gabbana all opened their shows with strong black silhouettes, while Chanel, Jil Sander, Ralph & Russo, Rochas, Kenzo, Lanvin and Brandon Maxwell championed tonal black throughout their collections.
NATURAL TONES
It’s one of the longest-lasting trends for the past few seasons, and it isn’t going anywhere soon. These monochromatic and neutral outfits are easy to replicate and look great on everyone. Choose from a sandy-colored suit with a turtleneck to a boilersuit or leather skirt. Don’t be afraid to experiment with varying shades of this neutral tone – try sand, camel, or even buff. The opportunities are endless, and it is a timeless option for anyone’s closet.
LEATHER COAT
CLASHING SUNSET
Pink and red is another taboo duo that is big news for autumn/winter. These shades, reminiscent of the world's very best sunsets, look just as great in segmentalised sections - e.g. via block colour separates - as they do woven throughout via clashing pattern work. Keep it cute and avoid messy aesthetic punctuation marks by ensuring any accessories are in on the clashing action too.
